MPSC Prelims Exam Pattern 2027
The MPSC Prelims exam is the first phase of the examination. The exam is an attempt to test the general knowledge, aptitude, and understanding of the socio-economic and political scenario of Maharashtra among candidates. According to the latest notice, this exam will transition to an online format and will be held two or more times a year. If held in multiple shifts a statistical Normalization method will be used to calculate scores. Qualifying in any one of the prelims sessions within that cycle makes a candidate eligible for the Mains exam.

MPSC Mains Exam Pattern 2027
The MPSC Mains Exam is the second and most important step of the selection process. This process tests the academic knowledge, analytical skills, and knowledge of the candidates on the topics of governance, society, and administration. With the complete removal of Optional Paper I and Optional Paper II, the number of papers has been reduced from 9 down to 7 compulsory papers. MPSC Mains Marathi Syllabus (Paper 1 - 300 Marks)
This paper aims to test the candidates' ability to read and understand serious discursive prose and to express ideas clearly and correctly in the Marathi language. The type of questions would be broadly as follows:
- Comprehension of given passages.
- Precis Writing.
- Usage and Vocabulary.
- Short Essays.
- Translation from English to Marathi and vice versa.
This Paper will be of a qualifying nature. The marks obtained in these papers will not be counted for ranking.
MPSC English Syllabus (Paper 2 - 300 Marks)
This MPSC paper pattern aims to test the candidates' ability to read and understand serious discursive prose and to express ideas clearly and correctly in the English language. The questions would be broadly as follows:
- Comprehension of given passages.
- Precis Writing.
- Usage and Vocabulary.
- Short Essays.
This Paper will be of a qualifying nature. The marks obtained in these papers will not be counted for ranking
MPSC Essay Syllabus (Paper 3 - 250 Marks)
The Essay Paper is divided into two sections. Both sections contain four topics each. Candidates should choose one topic from each section. The essays can be attempted in either Marathi or English, as per the option selected. Answers written in a medium other than the opted one will not be assessed.
MPSC General Studies 1 Syllabus (Paper 4 - 250 Marks)
Indian Heritage and Culture, History and Geography of the World, and Society, with some weightage to Maharashtra.
- Indian culture will cover the salient aspects of Art Forms, Literature, and Architecture from ancient to modern times.
- Bhakti movement and its philosophy with special reference to the saints’ movement in Maharashtra.
- Modern Indian history from about the middle of the eighteenth century until the present- significant events, personalities, issues.
- The Freedom Struggle – its various stages and important contributors /contributions from different parts of the country.
- Post-independence consolidation and reorganization within the country.
- The history of the world will include events from the 18th century, such as the industrial revolution, world wars, the redrawal of national boundaries, colonization, decolonization, political philosophies like communism, capitalism, socialism, etc., their forms, and effect on society.

Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude
- This paper will include questions to test the candidates’ attitude and approach to issues relating to integrity, probity in public life, their problem-solving approach, and decision-making to various issues and conflicts faced by them in dealing with society. Questions may utilise the case study approach to determine these aspects. The following broad areas will be covered:
- Ethics and Human Interface: Essence, determinants and consequences of Ethics in human actions; dimensions of ethics; ethics in private and public relationships.
- Human Values – lessons from the lives and teachings of great leaders, reformers, and administrators; role of family, society, and educational institutions in inculcating values.
- Attitude: content, structure, function; its influence and relation with thought and behaviour; moral and political attitudes; social influence and persuasion.
- Aptitude and foundational values for Civil Service, integrity, impartiality and non-partisanship, objectivity, dedication to public service, empathy, tolerance, and compassion towards the weaker sections.

What are the Changes in the New MPSC Syllabus and Exam Pattern 2027?
The Maharashtra Public Service Commission introduced historic changes to bring parity & streamline selection:
- Abolition of Optional Subjects: Optional Paper I & Optional Paper II are completely removed, dropping the total Mains descriptive papers from 9 to 7.
- Reduction in Total Marks: The written merit score drops from 1,750 to 1,250 marks. The final score (Mains + Interview) is now evaluated out of 1,525 instead of 2,025.
- Prelims Mode Shift: The Preliminary screening changes from a pen & paper OMR exam to an online Computer-Based Test (CBT).
- Increased Exam Frequency: The Prelims will be held two or more times a year with a statistical normalization formula across multi-shift sessions to give students more attempts.
- Marking Penalty Standard: Negative marking for objective papers is standardized at 1/4th (25%) per incorrect answer instead of the historical 1/3rd metric.
